DSpace is an open source digital repository software system for research institutions.
Developed jointly by the MIT Libraries and Hewlett-Packard Labs, DSpace is available under the BSD open source license for research institutions to run as-is, (out of the box) or to modify and extend as needed.

The way data is organized in DSpace is intended to reflect the structure of the organization using the DSpace system. Each DSpace site is divided into communities; these typically correspond to a faculty, research center or department. Communities can be organized into a hierarchy and contain sub-communities or collections.

The metadata entered during submission becomes the primary link for the item in DSpace. This is a permanent URL to the metadata record using the handle system. Files are added to this record and a record can contain more than one file.

Handles are used to create permanent URL's, if a web site moves it remains stable.
